Mission Model Assignment
Due Monday, February 21, 2017
The objective is to build a three dimensional model OR draw the floor plan OR create a Minecraft model of a typical California mission complex.
You will need to use the plan you drew in class as a guide and your notes. Be sure to include all essential elements of a typical mission. You may name your mission after yourself or whatever you choose, as long as it is appropriate. Use the list below to be sure you have included every part of the mission. Remember that many of the parts of a mission were placed in certain areas of the mission complex. You may also refer to your social studies book, your chart or other outside references. Be sure to label every part of your mission.
It is preferable that your mission be built with reusable materials from around your house. Some examples include: clean milk cartons, cardboard, shoe boxes, Popsicle sticks, etc. Please NO food items such as gingerbread or sugar cubes. We don’t need ant houses!
An alternative to a three dimensional model is to draw a floor plan on poster board. It will need to be neatly drawn, complete and labeled.
A third alternative is to create a model using a computer program such as Minecraft. Several examples are on YouTube under Minecraft CA Missions.
*Please note: Store bought missions may be convenient, but you will receive a grade no higher than a C. These kits are usually only the church building and do not include the entire mission complex which you learned about in class.
Your mission is due February 27. It will be marked down for every school day that it is late.
PARENTS: This is a fun project to do with your child, not for your child. There is a noticeable difference between a parent designed and built mission and a student designed and built mission. Good luck and happy building.
Your mission design must include all of the following with labels:
__Your name ___Native Indian village
___A name for your mission ___Soldiers quarters
___Fits on desk top (18”x 24”) ___Kitchen/Bakery
___Compass Rose ___Adobe brick & tile making
___Church (in NE corner) ___Weaving shop
___Mission bell ___Tannery
___Plaza/courtyard ___Soap/candle making
___Padres’ quarters ___Blacksmith/stables
___Guests’ quarters ___Carpentry/wood shop
___Garden ___Cemetery ___Adobe oven ___ Identified water source
___Workers’ quarters (women) ___Cattle brand
___All items neatly labeled ___Built as a quadrangle
